In the State of Peaches
This past weekend was spent travelling to the state of Georgia for a friend's wedding. This particular drive (on Friday) took...15 hours. Eventually, after talking to the hotel staff, we found our hotel and took a breather. Until we got into our room that is. Our tired eyes and brains beheld 1 king-size bed in a smoky-smelling room. Not exactly what we needed after a long trip, so Papa came to the rescue, and we went to sleep in a 2-bed room.
Next day we arrayed ourselves in wedding finery and headed out for breakfast. When we entered the small Waffle House, we noticed all the other customers glancing our way... Being the only customers in fancy outfits was definetly an attention grabber!
Once at the church, we watched Mrs. Bullinger (our neighbor who does wedding and portrait photography) take pictures of the bride (Cynthia Jeanine Moseley) and groom (Samuel Ennien Chen). The ceremony was traditional, and Pastor Duke gave a short sermon on what to expect from marriage. Mainly, that you shouldn't come into marriage thinking you can change your spouse. It doesn't work. The vows were lovely, and really magnified the meaning of "cherish" and "honor", since today those items are either misunderstood, or completely ignored.
After communion and a blessing by the elders the couple was presented as "Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Chen". Everyone then headed to the Moseley's church for the reception and further fellowship.
For dinner, the Bullingers headed to the Golden Corral buffet restaurant with the Marshalls in tow :-) Buffets are great for families such as the Bullingers since they have 5 boys, and we enjoyed talking, and investigating the many choices at the buffet counters.
The trip back to Michigan only took 13 hours and we were home in time to climb into bed by midnight.
Just peachy :-)

Tag with the Thompsons
Wednesday the 18th, found the Marshall ladies at the Thompson family residence for a day of fun, food, and fellowship! The Thompsons are a family of 12 , with 10 children ranging from 20 to 2. The newest thing in their lives is a brand new kitchen, complete with new appliances, cabinets, dishes and a drinking fountain! (With lots of little people, this feature saves on washing countless cups.) We oohhed and aahhed over their new acquisitions and decided that it looked not unlike a creation from the home editions of Extreme Makeover :-)
Once outside, the kids played a few games, one of which was Freeze Tag. By the time the kids persuaded me that playing games was more fun than taking pictures (I was enjoying a new flash, and the abundance of subjects), they had decided on Freeze Tag, and had unanimously nominated me as 'it'. So, I started running. And running. Finally, I 'froze' two little people and was starting on my third conquest when I realized that due to the uneven numbers (me against 10), every child I 'froze' was promptly 'unfrozen'! I'm sure I didn't give them much of a run for their money, but it was fun!
Inside the house, the mothers talked and looked over some skirts and jumpers that we girls had grown out of, the kids showed us their instruments and other creations, Amber (the eldest daughter) displayed her lovely crocheted afghans, and Evvie and Danielle (the third daughter) set up their annual Parade of Model Horses. For lunch, we had homemade quesadillas and brownies. (Marshalls always bring brownies!)
Visiting the Thompsons is always SO enjoyable, and we hope to do it again before 2006. ( Due to both of our busy schedules, our last visit was in 2004.)

Happy Mother's Day!
I hope all you mothers out there had a wonderful Mother's Day! For many I know it was a hard day, but we are grateful for all you have done in the lives of your families.
To celebrate the day, Mama chose Annick's Pizza, fruit salad (made by Evvie),and dark chocolate cake (courtesy of Pillsbury) made by yours truly. Catrina helped by wrapping her gifts :) We then settled down and viewed some Jimmy Stewart and Cary Grant movies.

Barn Dance
Saturday afternoon found the four of us girls industriously cleaning out our gray pole barn, in anticipation of the garage/barn sale we will be holding this summer. In a spirit of fun, we decided to turn on a favorite Jewish music CD by Marty Goetz called "Songs of Israel". And in the style of "Fiddler on the Roof", we began twirling in time with one of the tracks called "Hava Nagila". We didn't have any handkerchiefs so we waved plastic bags instead. Dodging around stacks of throw-away stuff, we laughed and sang along with Marty.... at least, we sang the parts we could understand, mainly "Hava nagila, hava nagila"...
So, whether it's waltzing in the family room to "The Nutcracker Ballet" or moving in time with "Hava Nagila" in the barn, dancing with my sisters will always be a fun memory for me, something to tell my children (and knowing the enjoyment of children in "what mother /dad used to do", I'll probably have to renact the performance). :-)
Shalom,
Allison
